" The Memory of Water":  Winter semester 2009/10

„The Memory of Water“

In the best tradition of British black humour, this award-winning comedy by playwright Shelagh Stephenson proves that death can reveal the absurdity of life. Anyone who's ever had a lousy Christmas, struggled with family dynamics, or bashed their head against the recalcitrant personalities of their parents or siblings, will enjoy this fabulous play. Describing three sisters locked in a tug-of-war over the past while dealing with the traumas of the present, The Memory of Water gets to the heart of family life with warm and raucous humour. It says that the way we remember things reveals more about ourselves than about the things being remembered. Perhaps a memory isn't a recording of the past, but a wish sent back from the future...  It's a lovely piece full of heart and humour. Excellent jokes give way to festering resentments and drunken hilarity, to sudden glimpses of buried secrets and aching pain. When sisters Mary, Teresa and Catherine gather together at their childhood home on the eve of their mother’s funeral, laughter and tears ensue in equal measure. As each of the sisters struggles to come to grips with their loss, childhood battle lines are unearthed and redrawn, memories are disputed and reinvented, life choices are analysed, and grief gives way to cathartic giggling fits.

The play will be performed 3th, 4th and 5th of February 2010 at 8.15 p.m. in the Stadtmensa (Am Exerzierplatz) in Würzburg.
